Create a treasure hunt

What kids don’t like a treasure hunt?! Of course, you could stick to an indoor treasure hunt, but that’s boring! Instead, we recommend heading out into the great British weather for some family fun.

If you have a garden, outdoors space, you could hide a few festive treats for your family to find. This can be made up of anything you have in your house, including candy canes, festive ornaments and gingerbread.

You could also venture further away from home and go for a treasure hunt in your local neighborhood. Even as adults we love going for a December stroll to see all of the Christmas lights!

Why not make it a challenge to see who can spot the most Christmas lights? Or you could make it a true hunt to find as many festive decorations as possible, including snowmen and reindeers.

We found some great treasure hunt printable from The Crazy Outdoor Muma, here.

Go outside a play

This is really basic, but in today’s tech-driven world it’s more than enough! Most of the UK were restricted to who they could visit last year due to a surge in Covid-19 cases. This year, we’re crossing our fingers for a somewhat normal Christmas!

In a recent survey, over half of UK adults said they planned to make the most of Christmas this year if there are no restrictions in place. Likewise, just under half are planning to spend more time with their friends and family than usual.

After the past 18 months we’ve had, we all deserve some much needed family time! Get wrapped up warm and head out for a winter walk around your local area. You could even venture to a nearby play park, if you’re willing to brave the cold!

Make a time capsule!

What better way to celebrate the end of a year than capturing memories that you’ll cherish forever?! Not only is a time capsule great to remember the past, it’s also a fun project for kids to get involved in.

Find a suitable storage box or jar and fill it with your memories from 2021. This can include photos, newspapers and letters to yourselves. You can then choose to bury your time capsule, or hide it up in your loft, to rediscover in a year or five.

Shoeboxes are great if you’re planning on storing your time capsule inside, but if you want to bury it outside you’ll need a weather-resistant box. There are really no limits to this, so you can allow your little ones to be as creative as they like.

Go sledding

If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere where you’ll have some snow then sledding is a great idea for the whole family! Head out nice and early and be the first to glide down the fresh snow tracks!

A lot of the time, you really don’t have to travel far to find somewhere fun for the kids. But we would recommend avoiding hills near busy roads, ponds or any other potential hazards! You’ll also want to wrap up warm, especially if you do have to walk home afterward.

When you do decide to head home, it’s the perfect opportunity to snuggle on the sofa with some hot chocolate. Which can only be made even better by watching your favourite Christmas movie!

Do you want to build a snowman?

Here at Diggerland, we like to promote outdoor play as much as possible. While building a snowman may not seem like a huge activity, it’s so fun for kids! (It also encourages their creative skills!)

You could run a snowman competition where you see who can build the best snow creature, or just have fun as a family. Plus, building snowmen always leads to a snowball fight!
