Long before excavators, cranes and telehandlers existed, Britain’s builders relied on little more than muscle power, clever engineering and an incredible amount of determination. Stone by stone, they created some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, many of which are still standing hundreds, and even thousands, of years later.

Today, construction sites look very different. Powerful machines can dig foundations in hours, lift tonnes of materials high into the air and transport heavy loads around a site with ease. Better still, at Diggerland, families can climb aboard many of these incredible machines and experience what it’s like to operate construction equipment for themselves!

Durham: From Norman Masterpiece to Modern Machinery

Imagine building one of Europe’s greatest cathedrals…

Without electricity. Without power tools. Without concrete mixers. Without cranes.

Sounds impossible?

Yet that’s exactly what happened when work began on Durham Cathedral in 1093. Remarkably, the main structure was completed by 1133, meaning much of this magnificent building took around 40 years to construct, a remarkably quick achievement for such a huge medieval project.

Even today, Durham Cathedral remains one of the finest examples of Norman architecture anywhere in the world.

Even better for families, Diggerland Durham is located just 6 miles away, approximately a 20-minute drive, making it easy to combine both attractions into an unforgettable weekend of history and heavy machinery.

How Was Durham Cathedral Built?

The first challenge was finding the stone. 

Thousands upon thousands of sandstone blocks were quarried by hand using iron chisels and hammers. Once cut, each enormous block had to be transported by horse and cart or floated along rivers before reaching the construction site.

Now came the really difficult part…

How do you lift several tonnes of stone over 100 feet into the air without a crane?

The answer was ingenious.

Builders used enormous wooden cranes powered entirely by people. Workers actually climbed inside giant wooden wheels, rather like giant hamster wheels, which slowly turned ropes wrapped around wooden drums, lifting huge stones skywards.

Every block was carefully shaped by master stonemasons before being placed with incredible precision.

There were no laser levels. No GPS. No hydraulic lifting equipment. Just years of skill, teamwork and patience.

How Would Durham Cathedral Be Built Today?

Modern construction would look dramatically different.

Surveyors would first map the site using drones and GPS technology before excavators prepared the foundations.

Tower cranes would lift huge stone sections into position within minutes rather than hours.

Concrete pumps would create strong foundations quickly, while telehandlers would move pallets of stone around the site with ease.

Instead of taking around 40 years, a cathedral of similar size could potentially be completed within 8–15 years, depending on its complexity, design and craftsmanship.

Could a JCB 3CX Have Helped?

Absolutely!

One of the stars of Diggerland is the famous JCB 3CX, a machine visitors can actually drive (subject to age restrictions) or ride.

On a real construction site, the JCB 3CX is one of the most useful machines ever built.

It combines:

  • A front loader for moving soil, gravel and building materials
  • Rear excavator for digging foundations and trenches
  • The ability to load dumpers and clear sites

Kent: Rochester Castle – Norman Power in Stone

Heading south to Kent, another fantastic UK family days out combination awaits.

Diggerland Kent, located at Medway Valley Leisure Park, is only around 2 miles from the magnificent Rochester Castle.

The castle’s origins date back to 1066, shortly after William the Conqueror invaded England. Its famous stone keep followed a few decades later, becoming one of the tallest and strongest defensive towers in medieval Europe.

Building a Norman Fortress

Norman castles weren’t designed to look pretty. They were designed to impress, and intimidate. Building Rochester Castle meant moving vast quantities of Kentish ragstone from local quarries. Workers dug deep foundations entirely by hand before constructing walls several metres thick. 

There were no cement mixers. Instead, builders created mortar using lime, sand and water, mixing everything manually. Huge timber scaffolding surrounded the castle while ropes, pulleys and wooden cranes slowly raised every stone.

Construction of the great stone keep is thought to have taken around 10 years, with hundreds of craftsmen, labourers and stonemasons involved.

Rochester Castle If It Were Built Today

Modern engineers would first carry out detailed ground investigations before excavators and bulldozers prepared the site. Concrete foundations could be poured in days.

Tower cranes would lift pre-cut stone or reinforced concrete panels into place. Whilst laser-guided equipment would ensure every wall remained perfectly straight.

A similar fortress could potentially be structurally completed in just 2–4 years, although traditional stone carving would still require skilled craftspeople.

Yorkshire: Kirkstall Abbey – Built by Monks Who Loved Simplicity

West Yorkshire is filled with incredible historic landmarks, making it another brilliant destination for UK family days out. 

Just 40 minutes from Diggerland Yorkshire in Castleford lies the spectacular ruins of Kirkstall Abbey. Founded in 1152, Kirkstall Abbey became one of Britain’s best-preserved Cistercian monasteries. 

But what exactly does Cistercian mean? The Cistercians were a Catholic religious order founded in France in 1098.

Unlike some wealthier monasteries, Cistercian monks believed in:

  • Living simply
  • Working hard
  • Farming their own land
  • Avoiding unnecessary decoration
  • Building practical, peaceful monasteries

Although simple in design, building an abbey was anything but simple.

Building Kirkstall Abbey

The monks chose a peaceful riverside location. Stone was quarried nearby before being hauled to the site by oxen and horses. Master masons carefully carved each block by hand. Massive timber scaffolding surrounded the rising walls while treadwheel cranes lifted heavy stones into position. Construction continued over several decades, with the abbey gradually expanding as more buildings were added.

Building an Abbey Today

Today, engineers would begin with detailed site investigations. Excavators would prepare foundations.

Concrete mixers, cranes, telehandlers and mobile lifting equipment would dramatically reduce construction times.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) software would allow architects, engineers and contractors to plan every stage digitally before work even began.

A comparable project might take 5–10 years instead of several decades.

Reach New Heights with the Skyshuttle

One of Diggerland’s most exciting attractions is the Skyshuttle.

Guests are lifted approximately 50 feet into the air inside a specially adapted seating platform attached to a telehandler boom, offering spectacular panoramic views across the park.

But what does a telehandler actually do on a real construction site?

Think of it as a giant mechanical arm.

A telehandler can:

  • Lift pallets of bricks
  • Raise roof trusses
  • Position steel beams
  • Move heavy building materials
  • Reach places that forklifts simply can’t

Different attachments mean one machine can perform dozens of different jobs.

If medieval cathedral builders had access to a telehandler, lifting stone blocks into position would have been far quicker, and far less exhausting!

Devon: From Wool Mills to Wheel Loaders

Our final stop takes us to beautiful Devon.

Just 3 miles from Diggerland Devon in Cullompton lies Coldharbour Mill Working Wool Museum in nearby Uffculme. Unlike castles and cathedrals, this fascinating attraction tells the story of Britain’s Industrial Revolution. 

Coldharbour Mill was established in 1797, becoming one of the country’s oldest surviving woollen mills. For centuries, Devon’s thriving wool trade produced cloth that was exported around the world.

Building Coldharbour Mill

By the late eighteenth century, construction methods had improved dramatically. Builders used locally made bricks alongside stone walls. Large timber beams supported the roof.

Cast iron components were becoming increasingly common thanks to advances during the Industrial Revolution. The building also needed space for huge water-powered machinery, so careful planning was essential.

Construction would likely have taken one to three years, depending on the size of the mill and the availability of skilled workers.

Building a Wool Mill Today

Modern industrial buildings are designed quite differently. Instead of thick stone walls, engineers often use:

  • Steel frames
  • Reinforced concrete
  • Prefabricated wall panels
  • Modern insulation
  • Sustainable roofing systems

Excavators would prepare the site. Concrete pumps would pour foundations. Telehandlers would move materials. Mobile cranes would install structural steel. What once took years could now be completed in six to twelve months.

From Medieval Builders to Modern Machines
