Experience vs the new kid on the block… who won?
At Diggerland UK, we are always looking for ways to bring something a little different, a little exciting, and a lot of fun for our visitors. This latest challenge delivered exactly that. The Ultimate Mini Digger Champion showdown had everything. Skill, suspense, competition, and a fantastic crowd of digger enthusiasts cheering every move.
This time, the spotlight was on two incredible competitors. Finlay Gallagher, the youngest CPCS qualified backhoe loader operator, and Diggerland’s very own seasoned pro, Dave Smith, a senior operator with over 20 years of experience.
It was a true battle of experience versus rising talent, and what a showdown it turned out to be.
The Challenge: Skittles with a Twist
The competition took place on one of Diggerland’s most popular and entertaining attractions, the Skittles challenge. For those who have not tried it yet, this is where precision meets control, as operators use a mini digger to knock down a full set of pins in the fastest time possible.
It sounds simple, but it is anything but.
This challenge demands:
- Sharp coordination
- Excellent spatial awareness
- Nerves of steel under pressure
With a buzzing crowd gathered and anticipation building, both competitors stepped up, ready to prove their skills.
Round One and Two: Experience Takes the Lead
Right from the start, Dave Smith showed exactly why he is one of Diggerland’s most experienced operators.
Cool, calm, and incredibly precise, Dave came out strong and took the first TWO challenges. Good job Dave. His years of experience were clear to see as he expertly manoeuvred the digger, knocking down the skittles with confidence and consistency.
The crowd could not help but cheer. At this stage, it was looking like experience might just have the edge. But if there is one thing we have learned at Diggerland, it is that anything can happen.
The Final Challenge: Blindfolds On
Then came the twist.
For the final round, we turned up the difficulty and the excitement by introducing a blindfold challenge.
Yes, you read that right. Blindfolds on.
With vision taken out of the equation, this round tested something completely different of trust in instinct and pure feel and control of the machine.
Suddenly, the playing field was level.
Finlay Gallagher Steps Up
This is where Finlay Gallagher truly came into his own.
Despite his young age, Finlay showed incredible composure and confidence. With the blindfold on, he relied on his training, instinct, and natural ability to guide the digger with impressive accuracy.
And the result?
Finlay Gallagher WON.
It was an incredible moment, and the crowd absolutely loved it. The cheers, applause, and excitement in the air made it clear that this was something special.
A Day to Remember
Honestly, it was such a great day from start to finish.
We were blown away by the turnout. It was amazing to see so many digger fans of all ages coming together to watch, support, and be part of the action. Families, enthusiasts, and first time visitors all joined in, creating an atmosphere that was full of energy and excitement.
Events like this are what Diggerland is all about. Bringing people together, creating unforgettable experiences, and celebrating the joy of diggers in a totally unique way.
