Family Days out at National Treasures: How well Do You Know the UK?

The school holidays might be over for now, but half term will be around all too soon. If you’re fresh out of ideas of how to entertain your family, why not check out some of these ideas for great family days out? The British Isles are home to much weird and wonderful history, and there are many modern marvels too, paying tribute to icons of British engineering, invention and design. What do you think are the national treasures of the UK, and how much do you know about them? Have you visited any of these before – or will they be next on your list for adventure?

In ancient times

Take a trip back to the prehistory to see some of Britain’s oldest national treasures. These ancient monuments have stood for thousands of years, leaving traces of a past which will enchant and enthrall the whole family.

Did you know?

  • Stonehenge is a great family day out – nearly one million people each year certainly think so! Quite special for a circle of giant rocks, but then it is over 5,000 years old and lines up with the sun on solstices.
  • One of the biggest Roman legacies in the UK is Hadrian’s Wall. It is 73 miles long and runs across Northumberland and Cumbria as a defence against the north. It’s hard to believe it was built without the modern machinery we use today – which you can check out on family days out at Diggerland Durham, only an hour away.

Knights and shining armour

The medieval period was a busy one for Britain. Wars, plagues, trade, triumphs and catastrophes have left their mark on the UK in the form of castles, churches, and many more exciting attractions all round the country – making a great day out for all the family.

Did you know?

  • Windsor Castle – home of the the Queen – is the oldest and largest castle in the world still inhabited. It was started in 1070, and took 16 years to build – although there have been a few alterations since then.
  • York Minster is one of the world’s largest cathedrals and took over 250 years to build. How long do you think it would take today? The machines at Diggerland Yorkshire might help you to find out.

Moving with the times

Beautiful buildings and innovative icons from the modern era can also be found in every corner of the UK. Exploring your hometown can be as exciting as travelling further afield, especially when you find out something you didn’t know.

Did you know?

  • Big Ben is not the name of the clock tower next to the Houses of Parliament – the name refers to one of the bells inside, which weighs 13.5 tonnes and first rung in 1859.
  • The Angel of the North graces the skyline near the A1 at Newcastle. It is 20 metres tall and has a wingspan of 54 metres.

The natural choice

The UK’s natural landscape is also a real treasure for the nation. From rolling fields and quiet rivers in the south to wild moorland and soaring peaks in the north, there’s plenty for your family to explore wherever you are.

Did you know?

  • Loch Ness is one of the longest and deepest lochs and a great favourite with outdoor enthusiasts – but is perhaps best known for being the home of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, of whom there has been over 3000 sightings since 1933. Take some binoculars and have a go at spotting her yourself!
  • Of the 16 main lakes in the Lake District, only one is officially a “lake” – Bassenthwaite Lake – whereas the others are all ‘waters’ or ‘meres’, like Windermere, the longest lake in England at 10.5 miles.

How many of these facts did you know? Where do you want to go next on your family days out? Keep exploring and discovering these places – and many more – for yourself.

Westlake wedding reception wows at Diggerland Kent!

I now pronounce you, man and wife!

These wonderful words are heard across the country, across all manners of venues.

How many of you have thought of holding your wedding reception at a Digger Theme Park?

One that’s filled with humongous diggers providing a unique backdrop? Well Ian and Hayley Westlake did just that and why are you asking?

They wanted something non-traditional and wanted uniqueness in abundance.

Their closest friends and family, did not think that the soon to be married couple, would do anything less than unique.

Arriving from their picturesque 12th Century church in Detling, the newly married Westlakes arrived at the theme park in Kent, Diggerland, with a bucket load of guests.

Some of the guests were already extremely excited, some amused, but most definitely surprised.

Of course, some guests just didn’t really know what to make of it, it’s not everyday you hold a reception in a theme park.

Ian and Hayley Westlake wedding reception at the Digger theme park in Kent, Diggerland!

To the reception!

The Westlakes, did surprisingly have a few more customary aspects to settle in their guests before an event unlike any other.

Beginning with welcome drinks, followed by a classic breakfast and of course, speeches.

The venue was transformed from a friendly family cafe to a stunningly, lavish wedding reception venue.

The newlyweds then let their 300+ guests loose into the theme park in Kent, Diggerland.

Hayley and Ian were lavished with compliments, becoming the coolest couple on the planet to all the children and many of the adults, who came away expressing that their inner child had been unleashed.

Inside, customary wedding reception activities were in flow with the chosen entertainment coming from 9 piece, soul inspired outfit `The Choos’.

The Westlake’s appear to be full of wonder as they also surprised their guests with an ice cream van!

What did the happy couple think of Diggerland as a host of their unique reception?

Well we are happy to say they enjoyed ‘Absolutely everything’, they told us that they were treated exceptionally well, just like royalty.

That every need was catered for and they could enjoy their day with the utmost ease.

It was a beautiful day for a white wedding… at Diggerland.

What the couple said about holding their reception at Diggerland:

“We would like to thank everyone involved in making our Wedding Day so special.

For us, our day was everything we could have wanted, and much more.

We have some amazing memories, with some amazing people, at a truly amazing venue –  We just did not want it to end.

In fact, we’re already wondering whether we can hold the first ever Diggerland  Anniversary Party!!!!”

A Day In The Life Of A Diggerland Theme Park Marshal

Ever wanted to know what it’s like to live in the day of a Diggerland Theme Park Marshal?

We asked our Park Marshal Samantha to give us the low-down…

Name: Samantha

Age: 18

Job title: Diggerland Park Marshal

Length of time working at Diggerland: 2 seasons

Marshals day-to-day routine

Diggerland:

How do you get ready to start your day?

Samantha:

My day starts with my morning alarm clock waking me up at 8:15am.

I fight my way into the bathroom to get ready, and then get dressed into my Diggerland uniform.

Breakfast is usually cereal, I have quite big bowl as you burn a lot of energy being a Diggerland Park Marshal. I also pack some snacks and water to see me through the day.

I beg my mum to drive me to work in her car, sometimes she obliges. If mum is busy that day, I walk to the local bus stop to catch the bus. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get to work, depending on if I am driven or get the bus.

What the job entails – on a daily basis

Diggerland:

How do you start off the morning at Diggerland?

Samantha:

When I arrive at work I clock in so that my manager knows when I have arrived. I usually clock in at 9.30am, as the park opens at 10:00am and I need to get sorted before opening.

I then put all my things in my locker, making sure I turn off my mobile phone so that it does not ring whilst I am at work.

Each morning starts with a Diggerland briefing, where our General Manager motivates us and tells us the aims and objectives for the day.

I’m then told which ride I’ll be operating for the day and then I’ll go to that attraction to check over the machine with the mechanic / fitter.

I might have to oil the machine, put diesel in the machine, or if it is an electric ride I’d have to ensure all the batteries are charged. If there are any problems, I would have to report this to our Park Manager straight away.

If all is well, we open and let customers enjoy the attractions.

Diggerland:

What do you do for lunch?

Samantha:

It depends on whether I have packed a lunch for the day. If I have, then I will sit and eat my lunch in the staff room.

Otherwise I will purchase food from the Dig Inn cafe and eat my food inside the cafe or on the grass outside, out of view of customers, just in case I decide to check my phone.

Diggerland:

What do you do in the afternoon?

Samantha:

In the afternoon I will ensure my ride or drive is all okay. I will check the battery if it is an electric run attraction. I will check the fuel levels. If my attraction requires any assistance I will notify the Park Manager, who will call for the fitter/mechanic if required.

Marshals thoughts on working at Diggerland Theme Park

Diggerland:

What do you like most about working at Diggerland?

Samantha:

The thing I like most about working at Diggerland is that no two days are the same.

One day I’ll be working on Spindizzy, and the next I’ll be on Skyshuttle. I love this because it gives variety.

Diggerland:

What is your highlight of working at Diggerland? Has there been a particular day that stood out?

Samantha:

The best day ever is when we had a little blind boy come to the park. Him and his family thought he would never drive a car in his life. We changed that for the little boy at Diggerland. Slowly and steadily he drove our Joyrider around the track, listening carefully to instructions given to him by the Marshal. The parents cried and it definitely brought a tear to my eye. It was a really special day.

The best thing is seeing the kids really happy and enjoying a day out with their family or friends.

Marshal’s outside life

Diggerland:

What do you do when you’re not working at Diggerland?

Samantha:

When I’m not working at Diggerland, I go to college. Currently I am studying a level 3 course in Business.

I also go to Army Cadets, I’m quite an active person and love to be outdoors.

Diggerland:

Do you get together with the other Diggerland Park Marshals?

Samantha:

Yes, the team all frequently get together. We might finish work and go bowling in the evening or go for a meal.

I really like it because everyone is really friendly, it’s just like one big happy family.

Marshal talks more about the job

Diggerland:

Where do you hope to go with this job, or your career in general?

Samantha:

I hope to go on to university to study Business. I’d quite like to see myself in a Customer Service Manager role.

Diggerland provides a great stepping stone for building upon your career.

I have learnt vital customer service skills and how to work well in a team, which are all really good transferable skills that I can use for any career path I wish to take.

Diggerland:

What challenges do you face in your job? How do you overcome them?

Samantha:

Sometimes we get upset customers because their children are too small for the ride. We have to explain that this is for health & safety reasons.

Diggerland:

What would you advise to anyone looking to join The Diggerland Theme Park Team?

Samantha:

To become a Diggerland Theme Park Marshal you need to be willing to learn new things, you need to not mind working outdoors, and you need to love kids. First and foremost you need to have a desire to help create fantastic memories for children and their families.
