And at Diggerland, you can get closer to these amazing machines than you might expect!
Let’s take a look at some of the machines you can find at Diggerland and discover what they do in the real world.
1. Dumpers – The Construction Site Carriers
Imagine you have a pile of sand on one side of a building site, but you need to move it to the other.
You could carry it bucket by bucket…
Or, you could use a dumper truck and get the job done much faster!
Dumpers move materials such as soil, sand, gravel and rubble around construction sites. Operators load materials into the large tipping body at the rear, then drive the dumper to wherever they need the load.
Once it reaches its destination, the operator raises the tipping body and releases the load.
Think of it as emptying a bucket. Only this bucket has wheels, an engine and a whole lot more capacity!
Can you drive a dumper at Diggerland?
Yes!
At Diggerland, our forward-tipping dumpers have been adapted for guests to drive around a specially designed track. The machines travel at a slower speed, giving visitors the chance to experience what it feels like to be behind the controls of a real construction machine.
So next time you see a dumper truck on a building site, you’ll know exactly why it is there.
Its job is simple: carry, move and tip!
2. Telehandlers – The Machines That Can Reach High
Now, what if you need to move something heavy and lift it high into the air?
That’s where a telehandler can help.
A telehandler has a long arm, called a boom, which can extend forwards and upwards. Different attachments can be fitted to the end of the boom, allowing the machine to perform different jobs.
Think of it as a construction machine with a very strong mechanical arm.
On a building site, a telehandler might be used to move building materials, lift loads or place materials where workers need them.
You might even have seen one being used to move large loads around a farm.
But at Diggerland, our telehandlers have some rather different jobs!
The Skyshuttle – Going Up!
Ever wondered what your neighbourhood looks like from 50 feet in the air?
The Skyshuttle lets you find out. A telehandler lifts guests high above Diggerland, offering a bird’s-eye view of the park and the surrounding area.
Its long boom rises into the air, carrying a specially designed passenger platform and its riders with it.
The Skyshuttle shows just how versatile a telehandler can be. On a construction site, it lifts materials. At Diggerland, it lifts you!
The ride reaches approximately 50 feet into the air, offering a slower, more relaxed experience compared with some of Diggerland’s bumpier rides.
The Groundshuttle – Hold On!
At Diggerland, the telehandler has another job, and this one is a little more bumpy!
The Groundshuttle uses a specially adapted telehandler and carriage to take guests across a specially designed course.
Instead of travelling upwards, the telehandler powers forwards over ridges and troughs in the ground.
The result?
A bumpy, rocking adventure that shows just how capable these machines can be when travelling over uneven ground.
So, if the Skyshuttle is about going up, the Groundshuttle is all about going over!
3. JCB 3CX – Two Machines in One
Here’s a machine you might recognise: the JCB 3CX.
The JCB 3CX is a backhoe loader, which combines two machines into one.
At the front, the loader bucket scoops, carries and moves materials such as soil. At the back, the excavator arm digs into the ground to create trenches, holes and foundations.
With both attachments working together, the JCB 3CX can tackle a wide range of jobs without the need for two separate machines. Think of it as a Swiss Army knife on wheels, with multiple useful tools built into one machine.
Can You Drive a JCB 3CX at Diggerland?
At Diggerland, you don’t just have to watch construction machinery in action, you can get behind the controls yourself!
Visitors can climb into a JCB 3CX and drive around a specially adapted track, with supervision from trained staff and subject to the relevant height requirements.
You can steer the machine, control its movements and navigate the track, giving you a hands-on taste of what it’s like to operate a real piece of construction equipment.
So, a machine you might normally see working on a construction site can become an exciting experience you can try for yourself.
4. Excavators – The Digging Experts
Now for one of the most famous construction machines of all: the excavator.
You probably know what an excavator is called.
A digger!
Excavators are designed to dig, scoop and move materials.
They have a cab where the operator sits, tracks or wheels underneath, and a powerful arm and boom fitted with an attachment such as a bucket.
The arm can move in different directions, allowing the operator to carefully place the bucket exactly where it is needed.
Excavators can be used for jobs such as digging foundations, trenches and drainage systems, moving soil and clearing areas ready for construction.
But what happens when you take a huge excavator and turn it into a ride?
The Komatsu PC210 Becomes Spindizzy!
At Diggerland, our Komatsu PC210 excavator has been given a very unusual job. Instead of digging a trench, its boom and arm are connected to a specially designed seating unit. This is Spindizzy!
Guests are safely secured into the seating unit before the excavator lifts them into the air and spins them in one direction.
Then comes the twist… It spins the other way!
The Spindizzy shows just how different a construction machine can look when it is used in a completely new way.
You might normally see an excavator digging up the ground.
At Diggerland, you can see one helping create a very different kind of adventure!
What Can Construction Machines Teach Us?
Construction machines aren’t just big, noisy vehicles.
They are clever pieces of engineering.
They use things like:
Hydraulics – systems that use pressurised fluid to help move powerful arms and attachments.
Levers – parts that help machines move and lift heavy objects.
Engines – the power source that helps the machine move and work.
Tracks and wheels – allowing machines to travel across different types of ground.
Attachments – buckets, forks and other tools that allow one machine to perform different jobs.
And there is something else that all construction machines need:
