Sustainability at Diggerland: Building a Greener Future for Fun Days Out

At Diggerland, we believe that fun and responsibility should go hand in hand. That’s why sustainability at Diggerland is more than just a tagline, it’s something we embed into how we run the parks every day. As you plan your next visit with family or friends, We want you to feel good about coming to us, not just because you will have an unforgettable time, but because we’re committed to protecting the planet too.

What Makes Diggerland Special

Let me start by reminding you what Diggerland is all about. We’re the UK’s only construction-themed adventure park where visitors get the chance to drive real diggers, dumpers, excavators and more. Across our four parks in Kent, Devon, Durham and Yorkshire, you’ll find over 20 rides and drive experiences, hands-on machine operation, indoor play zones and cafés. Whether you’re a parent, a thrill-seeker, or you have younger children in tow, there’s something for everyone. We always encourage people to check the details on our official website to pick the location and attractions that suit them. But beyond the fun, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to make sure our parks are kinder to the environment. That’s where sustainability at Diggerland really comes to life.

How We Do Sustainability at Diggerland

Solar Power and Energy Use

One of the cornerstones of our approach to sustainability at Diggerland is energy. You’ll spot solar panels on the roofs across all our parks; those panels feed into our electricity supply. We power some of our attractions, including Mini Landrovers and Go-Karts, using solar energy. It’s a small shift, but over time those savings add up and reduce reliance on nonrenewable sources.

Biomass Heating and Ground Source Heat

It’s not just electricity where we aim to be greener. In many of our buildings, we use biomass boilers that burn wood chips, which would otherwise be waste, to provide heat. We also make use of ground source heat pumps where possible, which draw heat from the earth rather than burning fuel. These systems help us keep spaces comfortable while reducing carbon emissions.

Reducing Waste and Responsible Products

We don’t want waste around our parks, so we try to source sustainable products where we can and encourage recycling wherever possible. We ask guests to bring reusable water bottles to cut down on single-use plastic. We also work with suppliers who share our values, and that’s another big part of sustainability at Diggerland. When we choose new vendors, we favour those with strong environmental practices.

Green Travel and Electric Charging

We know how important travel is to emission targets. Many of our staff walk, cycle or use public transport to get to work. For the cars we provide, our management team uses fully electric vehicles. For guests, we offer free electric car charging at all our parks in the UK. In Kent, for example, we also have TapZapGo ultra-rapid chargers available at our head office. That means when you drive here in an electric car, you’re not adding pollution, you’re just enjoying the fun. However, if you don’t have your own electric vehicle, we partner with EVision Electric Vehicles to offer the option to hire electric vehicles for short and long-term periods.

Tree Planting and Habitat Support

Another element of sustainability at Diggerland is our annual staff planting day. Every year, staff across the parks plant trees, shrubs and other vegetation. Not only do these plants look great, but they also support local wildlife and help make our parks more ecological. Around the grounds, you might spot birds, insects and other creatures thriving in the green spaces we nurture.

Why It Matters to You

When you visit, you may not see every detail, but every step we take in sustainability has an impact. By sitting in a ride powered by solar energy, or parking in a space with electric charging, you are part of the change. We want you to enjoy the fun days out we offer, knowing we’re trying to leave the world better than we found it.

Also, it means the parks stay viable long term. As energy costs rise and climate challenges grow, establishing sustainable practices helps keep Diggerland running without passing enormous costs onto visitors.

What You Can Do as a Guest

You don’t have to be a staff member to help with sustainability at Diggerland, you can play your part. Here are a few things you might try:

  • Bring a refillable water bottle instead of buying single-use plastics
  • Use recycling bins as you go round the park
  • Consider travelling by low-emission transport or carpooling
  • Respect the green spaces and wildlife areas
  • Ask staff about how certain rides are powered or how waste is handled

Small acts by many visitors make a real difference.

External Inspiration for Sustainable Days Out

A useful resource is The Green Tourism Business Scheme, which accredits tourism businesses for green credentials. Many UK attractions and hotels aim for such certifications today, and seeing Diggerland work in this space shows we take it seriously.

Keep Watching Us Grow Greener

Sustainability is not a one-time project. At Diggerland, we view it as an ongoing journey. We’re constantly reviewing what we do, watching new technologies, finding better materials and making sure our practices evolve. The actions we take now help future generations enjoy the parks in as good or better condition than we do now.
