Honouring VE Day: A Legacy of Service and Innovation at Diggerland

As we commemorate VE Day, celebrating the end of World War II in Europe, it’s a poignant moment to reflect on the enduring legacy of service and dedication that has shaped our nation. At Diggerland, we take pride in our roots and the remarkable individuals who have contributed to our journey.

A Legacy of Service: Hugh Edeleanu’s Military Commitment

Our Chairman, Hugh Edeleanu, exemplifies the spirit of service. In 1974, while building his first business, H. E. Services (Plant Hire) Ltd, he joined the British Army’s Royal Engineers. Rising to the rank of Major, Hugh served in bomb disposal during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. His dedication to both his country and his company underscores the values of resilience and commitment that continue to inspire us today.

A Family Tradition: Ion-Dan Edeleanu’s Service

Hugh’s father, Ion-Dan Edeleanu, also served in the British Army as a medical officer. Just after the war, he was stationed in Germany. Where he helped care for wounded British troops, providing vital medical support during a time of recovery and rebuilding. After qualifying in 1950, he also continued his service, playing rugby for the British Army team. His dedication to his medical role, alongside his athletic achievements, laid the foundation for a family tradition of service, resilience, and excellence that continues to inspire both Hugh and the Diggerland team today.

Diggerland: Where Legacy Meets Innovation

The Edeleanu family’s commitment to service and innovation is mirrored in the creation of Diggerland. What began as an H. E. Services family open day in 1996, where children were fascinated by construction machinery. Blossomed into the first Diggerland park in Kent, which opened in 2000 and is celebrating 25 years this April 2025. Today, Diggerland offers a unique experience where visitors of all ages can operate real construction machinery, blending fun with learning.

Honouring Service Through Innovation

As we celebrate VE Day, we honour the service of individuals like Hugh and Ion-Dan Edeleanu. Their dedication to both their country and their community continues to inspire us at Diggerland.

Beyond our theme parks, we are also proud of our Diggerland Plant Training School, which provides NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) qualifications. These qualifications are not only available to the general public but also to British Forces personnel, including those who have served in the military and are now transitioning into civilian life. The skills learned at our training school help these former service members pursue fulfilling careers in construction and engineering, continuing to serve their communities in a new and impactful way.

Supporting Veterans and New Careers

The Diggerland Plant Training School plays a key role in equipping former military personnel with essential qualifications for a successful career in the construction and engineering sectors. This commitment to supporting veterans reflects our deep appreciation for the service and sacrifice of those who have served, while also contributing to the development of new opportunities for them to thrive in the civilian workforce.
