Diggerland UK: The History Behind the UK Theme Park

Starting in the year 2000, Diggerland has grown rapidly in popularity. Diggerland, the UK’s only construction-themed attraction, offers a unique experience where children and adults can operate real diggers and enjoy over 20 exciting rides and attractions. With locations in Kent, Devon, Durham, and Yorkshire, it’s the perfect destination for families seeking a day filled with thrills and memories.

Who Made Diggerland?

Diggerland UK began with a bold idea from Hugh Edeleanu, Chairman of H. E. Services.  Initially, the company held an open day for clients and families. Then children discovered they loved sitting on diggers, while their parents inspected machinery for work. Clearly, those young visitors sparked something unexpected. With this, the first park opened in April 2000. Remarkably, over 20,000 people attended in its first year. Subsequently, the concept evolved into a full-blown attraction. Indeed, the “theme park” concept here is quite unique. Diggerland blends rides with real construction machines, and its mission became clear: offer hands-on fun for all, providing great family days out.

How Many Parks are There?

Currently, four Diggerland theme parks operate in England. Those sites stand in Strood, Kent; County Durham; Devon; and Yorkshire. Additionally, there is one official Diggerland in the United States. Therefore, the UK has access to four Diggerland park locations. Each park invites families to drive diggers, dumpers and skidsteers, along with other construction machinery. As a result, each location buzzes with activity and smiles.

When Did the Diggerland Parks Open?

The first UK park launched in Strood, Kent, in April 2000. Then County Durham followed in 2001. Also in 2001, the Cullompton, Devon park opened. Meanwhile, Castleford in West Yorkshire began welcoming visitors in 2007. Consequently, the parks’ collective footprint expanded over seven years. Ultimately, the brand showcased its nationwide appeal, and the Kent site was so popular that it moved to a much bigger site in 2003.

About the “Theme Park” Concept

Diggerland is not a traditional theme park. Instead, it pioneered the “theme park” idea with heavy machinery as the focus. Instead of roller coasters, you can find real JCBs and diggers. Similar to other theme parks, Diggerland has a team of expertly trained marshals to guide and assist visitors on each ride. Providing an in depth overview of the machines and how to use them.

However, for those that love the thrill of something a bit more, rides such as Skyshuttle that elevates visitors 50 feet in the air will be sure to have this element covered. Also, attractions such as Spindizzy spin visitors around in a specially designed and manufactured digger bucket.

In addition, the Dig-A-Round carousel gives a construction twist. Diggerland offers both a fun day out, filled with learning, and hands on fun. What more could you ask for?
