As Covid-19 travel restrictions ease, domestic holidaying is back on the card! For those seeking a quick weekend getaway, here are our top five spots for family fun days out! From the sandy beaches of Brighton to the historic city of York, there’s bound to be something for the whole family. Not forgetting Diggerland of course!
Holidaymakers in the UK are chasing the sun closer to home this summer. According to the Tripadvisor Summer Travel Index, roughly 41% of Brits are planning a staycation rather than travelling internationally.
1. Bourton-on-the Water, The Cotswolds
You know you’re going to see some of the best views of the English countryside when you visit The Cotswolds – and Bourton-on-the Water is no exception! If you’re looking for a chilled out, relaxing family getaway then this is the place for you.
That being said, there’s still more than enough to keep the whole family occupied! You could take the kids to get lost in the Dragonfly Maze or learn more about our feathered friends at Birdland.
2. York, Yorkshire
Step back in time and visit the winding, cobbled streets of York. The city of York is just two hours North of London by rail and holds 1,900 years’ worth of history in its ancient walls.
Want to see the city at its fullest? Make sure you check out the 800 year old York Minster with its intricate stained glass, stonework and tombs! If you have the stamina, you can climb the 275 stone steps to the top of the tower for a 360-degree view.
You can also have some family-friendly fun days out by visiting the York Maze which has the largest Maize Maze in all of Europe! The park has a new design every year for all guests, young and old, to solve.
3. Maidstone, Kent
Tucked away in the agricultural capital of Kent, the vibrant town of Maidstone offers a taste of both country and city life.
While you’re there, make sure you plan a visit to Leeds Castle for a relaxing afternoon – it’s the perfect spot for a picnic! Otherwise, why not get up close and personal with a variety of beautiful owls at the Kent Owl Academy? The kids can even try their hand at flying a barn owl!
Our Diggerland Theme Park in Kent is only a 20 minute drive from Maidstone city centre! So why not check out some of our family favourite rides such as Spindizzy, Skyshuttle and the Dirt Diggers?! We guarantee you won’t want to miss it!

4. Brighton, East Sussex
Pack your beach towels and escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a sunny, cheerful Brighton! You can get you tan on at Brighton Beach, or relive your childhood days with the kids at the penny arcades.
For those craving a little more exercise, the Cycling Tour of Brighton City is a great way to work out while seeing the iconic landmarks of Brighton. Alternatively, take your kids for a day under the sea at Brighton’s Aquarium.
