It’s Time To Go Clean & Green

Do you think of a clean and green theme park, when you think Diggerland? We completely get that you may have said no! We’re putting the word ‘theme park’ in the same sentence as ‘diggers’ of course.

However at Diggerland, you would be surprised at how much our theme parks are greener and cleaner than you might first think.

Biomass Boilers

We have carbon-neutral biomass boiler systems that not only provide heat for the premises but which also generate surplus electricity.

Solar Panels

In the last few years, all Diggerland parks have been heavily involved in installing solar PV panels on the roofs of our buildings. This helps to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases by producing environmentally friendly energy.

Electric Run Rides and Drives

We all know that diggers are dirty diesel guzzling machines. This is why at Diggerland, we have introduced rides and drives that run on electric instead.

Our fully electric rides and drives include our Mini Landrovers, Crazy Carts and Quad Bikes.

More Electrifying News

Not only can the kids enjoy driving around in electric cars but the grown ups can too! We have electric vehicle charging points installed at each UK Diggerland theme park. The charging ports are type 2 connectors. Patrons of Diggerland can charge up their EVs for free at any Diggerland. If you arrive and the charging ports are occupied, then check out ZapMap to see when the charging ports are available again. You can pop out of the Diggerland theme park but be sure to get your hand stamped so you can return again.

If you have not yet experienced driving an electric car, then this can all change. All of our Diggerland UK theme park locations have electric vehicle hire satellite points, courtesy of EVision Electric Vehicle Hire. So whilst visiting a Diggerland park, you could enjoy a drive in an electric vehicle, such as the luxury Tesla Model S or fun-size BMW i3.

Electric Diggers

Electric diggers are quite scarce at the moment, however the well-known digger manufacturer JCB are working on that.

JCB has already introduced an electric JCB 19C-1E digger. The JCB digger which is completely without an internal combustion engine has won the prestigious MacRobert Award. This digger has to date saved 15,100kg in CO2 emissions across 5,616 hours of work.

We hope to see many more electric diggers on the market and hopefully thereafter at our Diggerland theme parks. Electric diggers are definitely the future for innovation to boost sustainability. Having a green and clean theme park is definitely at the top of our agenda.

What About You?

Are you clean and green? Everything from what we eat to what we use and what we do all impacts the environment.

Be sure to eat lots of fruits and vegetables to ensure your body is clean and consumes lots of nutrients. Eating natural foods such as fruits and vegetables helps to reduce the amount of plastic produced. Just think of all the crisps and chocolate bar packaging. Eating healthily will aid your body as well as the environment. Try to buy your fruit and veg loose if you can, rather than packaged.

Does your family recycle? With so much waste being dumped in our landfills and seas, we are ruining our beautiful planet. At least when we recycle our plastic, glass and cardboard these can be reused, therefore reducing the negative impact on our environment.

Help the environment every day by doing one simple thing – brushing your teeth. Do you use a plastic toothbrush when you brush your teeth? If so, you could be contributing to the 50 million pounds of waste that goes to landfill every year. Instead switch to a Bamboo toothbrush and every two to three months, snap off the nylon bristle head and throw the bamboo toothbrush handle in the compost.

How Can You Help Diggerland Be A Greener Place?

When visiting our Diggerland parks, try to reduce the amount of waste you bring with you. If you fancy a picnic, then why not wrap your food in beeswax wraps? Once your food has been eaten, you can take the beeswax wraps home with you, rinse them under the tap and use them again.

Do you want to visit our clean and green theme park?

We advise customers to pre-book their tickets before their chosen visit date to guarantee entry to the park. Visitor numbers have been reduced to 500 people so we don’t want guests to be turned away.

Unfortunately Duggy and Dotty will not be around when we re-open as they have to self-isolate for a bit longer. They can’t wait to get back to the parks to give hugs and high-fives. Until then, stay safe, and most importantly, have an exciting family day out to Diggerland!

How To Enjoy Family Days Out During A Pandemic

The UK and most of the world is currently on lockdown due to a very serious pandemic. Coronavirus (Covid-19) is not going away any time soon, so how do you keep the whole family entertained and enjoy family days out under these unusual circumstances?

Family Days Out Just Got Creative

First of all family days out don’t have to be miles away! You can enjoy family time together during this glorious weather in your own back garden.

Why not get the whole family to choose some of their favourite foods and set up a picnic in the garden? Your garden can become a world of adventure for little ones. We’re sure the bigger kids in your household won’t mind either. After all everyone loves food and the great outdoors! It’s a wonderful way to spend quality time together.

If you don’t have a garden perhaps you have a flat with a balcony. The same applies, why not set up a blanket outside and enjoy some nibbles in the sunshine? You don’t need ample space to be able to enjoy family time and glorious fresh air.

Outside Games

We don’t just mean outside games, you can also play inside games but just outside. For example whilst enjoying a lovely picnic, why not dig out a pack of cards or Uno? You can also order fantastic family games online and have them delivered to your home.

You can of course enjoy those outdoor games such as rounders, skittles, some bat and ball or football. Just be sure the kids don’t accidently kick or throw the toys into a nearby garden. As you may not be seeing those toys for a while.

Bugs!

Whilst the parents don’t quite enjoy bugs, kids absolutely love them! So why not send the children on a bug hunt? Set up a quiz sheet so they have to find all of the creepy crawlies and tick them off. You can then score how many bugs were found and reward your little ones with a sticker or a tasty treat.

Another fun family adventure is to build a bug house in the garden. When enjoying family days out at various theme parks and attractions, you will quite often find bug houses. The kids marvel at them and will spend ages trying to find all sorts of creepy crawlies. So why not create your own?

It doesn’t take much to create a bug house, all you need is:

  • Sticks of all different sizes
  • Leaves
  • Stones
  • Loose bark
  • Cardboard

Whilst the family endure a nice bit of exercise once a day, pop to the park and start collecting items to take home and create the bug house.

A bug house doesn’t need to be super fancy, the kids can get as creative as they like. We’d recommend putting the bug house somewhere in the garden where there is shade but also where the sun might reach at certain points in the day. This is because some bugs love the sunshine and others love the shade.

If you’ve got an old plant pot, this could create a perfect base for building a bug house. We have bug hotels at Diggerland and the kids just adore them. Check them out for ideas.

Get planting

Marks and Spencers supermarkets currently have a special promotion whereby if grown ups spend £20 or more on food, little ones can receive a vegetable grow pot.

They are called seedling kits and there are various vegetables to collect and grow such as carrots, basil, beetroot, lettuce and many more.

These little pots start off inside on a window sill and then they can go outside when large enough. Enjoy family days out making vegetable patches in the garden. If you live in a block of flats, then use the outside space to create something for the whole community.

Vegetables promote a healthy lifestyle and during a pandemic they are often the foods that are difficult to find. Therefore growing your own will help to provide ample nutrients for everyone.

Create a walk along sing song

Get the kids involved in a walk along sing song. There are so many benefits to singing from improving mental health, lowering stress levels and boosting confidence. To even strengthening the immune system, according to the University of Frankfurt. Don’t believe us on this last one? The researchers at the university tested the blood of singers before and after rehearsal. They noticed that in most of the subjects, the amount of proteins in the immune system that function as antibodies were significantly higher immediately after the rehearsal. So there you have it.

If singing is your thing, you could always go to an old peoples home and have your little darlings entertain the residents. The residents can listen through the windows. If you want to stay a lot closer to home, go and see that elderly neighbour so they don’t feel as alone during this isolating time.

If you’re embarrassed about singing in public, then go to a large field and sing where no one else is around. Let’s face it though, most people will be in their homes anyway. Stay safe though everyone!

We hope we have given you some great ideas to enjoy family days out together.

The Future

We of course hope that these little ideas for family days out together but local to home are a temporary thing. Everyone stay safe and look after loved ones by following Boris Johnson’s simple yet necessary rules.

Hopefully we will see you all again at one of our Diggerland UK parks in the very near future.

See you soon!

Award Winning Attraction Diggerland Wins A Family Traveller Award

Diggerland wins a Family Traveller Award

Popular family theme park Diggerland, with four locations in the UK have won a very prestigious Family Traveller Award.

FamilyTraveller_Awards_13Nov19-19

On November 13th, 2019, Diggerland attended the glitzy Family Traveller Awards. The amazing evening event was held at the London Ice Rink venue in South Kensington. It was a cold November evening, but this didn’t dampen anyone’s moods. As the beautiful Christmas lights twinkled, everyone knew something magical would happen.

The night saw 50 of the top travel experience providers crowned winners. Hosted by renowned singer songwriter, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, the whole evening was full of excitement!

In a very new approach to the awards, Family Traveller moved away from the standard set award groups.

This was to make them more meaningful and relevant to how British families are travelling. It’s also a way to adapt to the emerging and changing travel trends. The move gave Family Traveller readers the freedom to nominate the most unique and family friendly travel brands. Which were then grouped into ten clear and well-defined themes.

Over 110,000 votes were cast by Family Traveller readers! All in order to find the 50 Excellence Award Winners. Can you believe this was double the number of votes cast for the 2018 awards!

A Day In The Life Of A Diggerland Theme Park Marshal

Ever wanted to know what it’s like to live in the day of a Diggerland Theme Park Marshal?

We asked our Park Marshal Samantha to give us the low-down…

Name: Samantha

Age: 18

Job title: Diggerland Park Marshal

Length of time working at Diggerland: 2 seasons

Marshals day-to-day routine

Diggerland:

How do you get ready to start your day?

Samantha:

My day starts with my morning alarm clock waking me up at 8:15am.

I fight my way into the bathroom to get ready, and then get dressed into my Diggerland uniform.

Breakfast is usually cereal, I have quite big bowl as you burn a lot of energy being a Diggerland Park Marshal. I also pack some snacks and water to see me through the day.

I beg my mum to drive me to work in her car, sometimes she obliges. If mum is busy that day, I walk to the local bus stop to catch the bus. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get to work, depending on if I am driven or get the bus.

What the job entails – on a daily basis

Diggerland:

How do you start off the morning at Diggerland?

Samantha:

When I arrive at work I clock in so that my manager knows when I have arrived. I usually clock in at 9.30am, as the park opens at 10:00am and I need to get sorted before opening.

I then put all my things in my locker, making sure I turn off my mobile phone so that it does not ring whilst I am at work.

Each morning starts with a Diggerland briefing, where our General Manager motivates us and tells us the aims and objectives for the day.

I’m then told which ride I’ll be operating for the day and then I’ll go to that attraction to check over the machine with the mechanic / fitter.

I might have to oil the machine, put diesel in the machine, or if it is an electric ride I’d have to ensure all the batteries are charged. If there are any problems, I would have to report this to our Park Manager straight away.

If all is well, we open and let customers enjoy the attractions.

Diggerland:

What do you do for lunch?

Samantha:

It depends on whether I have packed a lunch for the day. If I have, then I will sit and eat my lunch in the staff room.

Otherwise I will purchase food from the Dig Inn cafe and eat my food inside the cafe or on the grass outside, out of view of customers, just in case I decide to check my phone.

Diggerland:

What do you do in the afternoon?

Samantha:

In the afternoon I will ensure my ride or drive is all okay. I will check the battery if it is an electric run attraction. I will check the fuel levels. If my attraction requires any assistance I will notify the Park Manager, who will call for the fitter/mechanic if required.

Marshals thoughts on working at Diggerland Theme Park

Diggerland:

What do you like most about working at Diggerland?

Samantha:

The thing I like most about working at Diggerland is that no two days are the same.

One day I’ll be working on Spindizzy, and the next I’ll be on Skyshuttle. I love this because it gives variety.

Diggerland:

What is your highlight of working at Diggerland? Has there been a particular day that stood out?

Samantha:

The best day ever is when we had a little blind boy come to the park. Him and his family thought he would never drive a car in his life. We changed that for the little boy at Diggerland. Slowly and steadily he drove our Joyrider around the track, listening carefully to instructions given to him by the Marshal. The parents cried and it definitely brought a tear to my eye. It was a really special day.

The best thing is seeing the kids really happy and enjoying a day out with their family or friends.

Marshal’s outside life

Diggerland:

What do you do when you’re not working at Diggerland?

Samantha:

When I’m not working at Diggerland, I go to college. Currently I am studying a level 3 course in Business.

I also go to Army Cadets, I’m quite an active person and love to be outdoors.

Diggerland:

Do you get together with the other Diggerland Park Marshals?

Samantha:

Yes, the team all frequently get together. We might finish work and go bowling in the evening or go for a meal.

I really like it because everyone is really friendly, it’s just like one big happy family.

Marshal talks more about the job

Diggerland:

Where do you hope to go with this job, or your career in general?

Samantha:

I hope to go on to university to study Business. I’d quite like to see myself in a Customer Service Manager role.

Diggerland provides a great stepping stone for building upon your career.

I have learnt vital customer service skills and how to work well in a team, which are all really good transferable skills that I can use for any career path I wish to take.

Diggerland:

What challenges do you face in your job? How do you overcome them?

Samantha:

Sometimes we get upset customers because their children are too small for the ride. We have to explain that this is for health & safety reasons.

Diggerland:

What would you advise to anyone looking to join The Diggerland Theme Park Team?

Samantha:

To become a Diggerland Theme Park Marshal you need to be willing to learn new things, you need to not mind working outdoors, and you need to love kids. First and foremost you need to have a desire to help create fantastic memories for children and their families.
