A Day In The Life Of A Diggerland Theme Park Marshal

Ever wanted to know what it’s like to live in the day of a Diggerland Theme Park Marshal?

We asked our Park Marshal Samantha to give us the low-down…

Name: Samantha

Age: 18

Job title: Diggerland Park Marshal

Length of time working at Diggerland: 2 seasons

Marshals day-to-day routine

Diggerland:

How do you get ready to start your day?

Samantha:

My day starts with my morning alarm clock waking me up at 8:15am.

I fight my way into the bathroom to get ready, and then get dressed into my Diggerland uniform.

Breakfast is usually cereal, I have quite big bowl as you burn a lot of energy being a Diggerland Park Marshal. I also pack some snacks and water to see me through the day.

I beg my mum to drive me to work in her car, sometimes she obliges. If mum is busy that day, I walk to the local bus stop to catch the bus. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get to work, depending on if I am driven or get the bus.

What the job entails – on a daily basis

Diggerland:

How do you start off the morning at Diggerland?

Samantha:

When I arrive at work I clock in so that my manager knows when I have arrived. I usually clock in at 9.30am, as the park opens at 10:00am and I need to get sorted before opening.

I then put all my things in my locker, making sure I turn off my mobile phone so that it does not ring whilst I am at work.

Each morning starts with a Diggerland briefing, where our General Manager motivates us and tells us the aims and objectives for the day.

I’m then told which ride I’ll be operating for the day and then I’ll go to that attraction to check over the machine with the mechanic / fitter.

I might have to oil the machine, put diesel in the machine, or if it is an electric ride I’d have to ensure all the batteries are charged. If there are any problems, I would have to report this to our Park Manager straight away.

If all is well, we open and let customers enjoy the attractions.

Diggerland:

What do you do for lunch?

Samantha:

It depends on whether I have packed a lunch for the day. If I have, then I will sit and eat my lunch in the staff room.

Otherwise I will purchase food from the Dig Inn cafe and eat my food inside the cafe or on the grass outside, out of view of customers, just in case I decide to check my phone.

Diggerland:

What do you do in the afternoon?

Samantha:

In the afternoon I will ensure my ride or drive is all okay. I will check the battery if it is an electric run attraction. I will check the fuel levels. If my attraction requires any assistance I will notify the Park Manager, who will call for the fitter/mechanic if required.

Marshals thoughts on working at Diggerland Theme Park

Diggerland:

What do you like most about working at Diggerland?

Samantha:

The thing I like most about working at Diggerland is that no two days are the same.

One day I’ll be working on Spindizzy, and the next I’ll be on Skyshuttle. I love this because it gives variety.

Diggerland:

What is your highlight of working at Diggerland? Has there been a particular day that stood out?

Samantha:

The best day ever is when we had a little blind boy come to the park. Him and his family thought he would never drive a car in his life. We changed that for the little boy at Diggerland. Slowly and steadily he drove our Joyrider around the track, listening carefully to instructions given to him by the Marshal. The parents cried and it definitely brought a tear to my eye. It was a really special day.

The best thing is seeing the kids really happy and enjoying a day out with their family or friends.

Marshal’s outside life

Diggerland:

What do you do when you’re not working at Diggerland?

Samantha:

When I’m not working at Diggerland, I go to college. Currently I am studying a level 3 course in Business.

I also go to Army Cadets, I’m quite an active person and love to be outdoors.

Diggerland:

Do you get together with the other Diggerland Park Marshals?

Samantha:

Yes, the team all frequently get together. We might finish work and go bowling in the evening or go for a meal.

I really like it because everyone is really friendly, it’s just like one big happy family.

Marshal talks more about the job

Diggerland:

Where do you hope to go with this job, or your career in general?

Samantha:

I hope to go on to university to study Business. I’d quite like to see myself in a Customer Service Manager role.

Diggerland provides a great stepping stone for building upon your career.

I have learnt vital customer service skills and how to work well in a team, which are all really good transferable skills that I can use for any career path I wish to take.

Diggerland:

What challenges do you face in your job? How do you overcome them?

Samantha:

Sometimes we get upset customers because their children are too small for the ride. We have to explain that this is for health & safety reasons.

Diggerland:

What would you advise to anyone looking to join The Diggerland Theme Park Team?

Samantha:

To become a Diggerland Theme Park Marshal you need to be willing to learn new things, you need to not mind working outdoors, and you need to love kids. First and foremost you need to have a desire to help create fantastic memories for children and their families.
